BALATONGYÖRÖKBalatongyörök is one of the most beautiful villages of the Balaton Highlands and its wine region and is situated in one of the most magnificent area on the shore of Lake Balaton . Part of the village is built on the lower slopes of the Keszthely mountains. From the hills in the northern part of the village you can see the basalt hills of the Tapolca Basin and the southern shore of the lake. It was only in the 1920s that Balatongyörök became a recognized tourist resort. Today lots of tourists come to visit the cellars on Becehegy and one of the most popular lidos on the Zala side of Lake Balaton. Szépkilátó Hill rises from the eastern end of Balatongyörök. It is not surprising that the name of the hill translates as the 'hill with a beautiful view'. Standing on the summit you have the lake immediately below with the surrounding hills. The enchanting panorama both of Lake Balaton and the mountains has inspired many painters. The Római forrás (Roman Spring) at the foot of the hill used to be a Roman settlement. Other outings can be made from the village, too. A walk along the pathway marked yellow takes us to Büdöskút and its Arboretum. The way to the forester's house leads through picturesque country, passes a cave and the Padkő group of rocks. The green waymarks lead to Becehegy, on which there are wine press-houses in the local style of peasant architecture and a 18th century chapel. Continuing our walk we reach the look-out Székmány, from which there is a wonderful view of the basalt hills.
Among the events, programmes of great importance in the village those which deserve a mention are the following: the Balaton-season Opening Festival at Whitsun, the Wine Week, grape-harvest festivals, fish soup cooking etc. We hope that the excellent wines of the vineyards, the delicious dishes of the local restaurants and the varied cultural programmes and services will arouse your attention.
